Answer
A number of situations may result in serial port conflicts. Certain software
applications will take over or reserve a number of COM ports. Others may
rename COM ports without your knowledge. However, the most common conflicts
occur when you try to connect PoinTech to a PC that is being used with
other serial port devices, such as modems, personal data assistants, or
writing tablet programs.
When a conflict arises and the PoinTech application indicates that it
cannot connect to PoinTech, check the hardware cable connections, then
use the Attach PoinTech Settings dialog box to test your COM port connections.
When you test your COM ports you can receive one of three results for
each COM port.
* PoinTech has been successfully located.
This message indicates PoinTech has been found and is communicating
with the PoinTech application.
* Unable to detect PoinTech.
This message indicates the COM port is open and installed, but PoinTech
is not connected to the port. If you receive this message, check to
make sure the PoinTech serial cable is properly attached.
* Serial port could not be opened.
This message usually indicates that another device is using the serial
port to which you connected the PoinTech. The most common example is
a Personal Data Assistant which uses a docking device attached to a
serial port.
