Answer
There are a number of factors that can cause the PoinTech application
to record your whiteboard drawing inconsistently or not at all. If you
experience difficulty recording your whiteboard marker and eraser strokes
on your PC, refer to the following suggestions:
* Serial port conflict
If a stylus or eraser does not work at all, you may have a serial port
conflict on your PC. Please
see Q3 How do I fix a serial port conflict?
for more information.
* Damaged stylus set or eraser
Try another stylus or the eraser. If it works correctly, the original
stylus set or eraser may be damaged. See the
PoinTech web site for information on replacing broken hardware.
* The PoinTech's sensors blocked
Make sure you do not place your hand or arm between
the stylus set (eraser) and the PoinTech's sensors. If you block the
PoinTech's sensors, it cannot sense where you move your stylus set or
eraser.
* Orientation
For a stylus, make sure the clear cover of the stylus set is pointing
up. If it is pointing to the left or right, you may not be sending stroke
information consistently as you draw on your whiteboard. For the eraser,
make sure the eraser pad is flat against the whiteboard. It is possible
to erase with the edge of the eraser and not send information to the
PoinTech's sensors if the eraser pad is not flat against the whiteboard.
* Pressure
Try pressing slightly harder with the stylus set or eraser. It is possible
to draw or erase lightly enough that no signal is sent to the PoinTech's
sensors.
* Low battery
If the battery in the stylus set or eraser runs very low, there may
not be enough power to trigger the Low Battery warning in the PoinTech
application. Try inserting a new battery into your stylus set or eraser.
* Unfriendly environments
There may be intermittent or low level infrared or ultrasound interference
in your work area. Use the Attach PoinTech Settings dialog box to test
your work area. It may be necessary to move PoinTech to another area
or locate, and turn off the source of the intermittent interference.
Sources of interference include security systems that use active infrared
sensors. See the
PoinTech web site for more information.
* PoinTech in direct sunlight
Sunlight can flood the PoinTech's infrared sensors, causing failure or
erratic behavior when you try to use the PoinTech application and ActiveMouse.
Close the window shades and keep sunlight off of PoinTech and your working
surface.
* Drawing in non-recordable areas
A 3.9" (10cm) band on the left edge of the board is a margin, where no
manipulation could be done. Drawing in the shaded area as shown may
degrade the performance.

* Pressing both eraser pads while erasing
If you use the narrow eraser pad, but hold the eraser so that you are
also pressing the wide eraser pad, both eraser surfaces may send signals
to PoinTech's sensors. This causes the sensors to lose track of the
eraser strokes. Do not grip the eraser pad that is not against the whiteboard.
